Default UIQ is going nowhere, Sony Ericsson are done with it - 10-22-2008, 05:21 PM

Sony Ericsson doomed the Symbian UIQ platform by publicly stating at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London that "UIQ didn't attract the operator, manufacturer or consumer interest needed to stop it from failing".

The other shareholder, Motorola, didn't have anything to comment.

Sony Ericsson's Patrick Olson admitted the failure of the UIQ platform to gain a steady fan base among users and a steady business case among network carriers. "Or rather it didn't make it. Another oxbow lake in the mobile industry story. Sad." - as he puts it.

That statement obviously explains the reason why Sony Ericsson cancelled their two latest UIQ smartphones even before they are officially announced. SE are obviously going full steam ahead with the Symbian Foundation, which will stake at providing a unified UI on diverse platforms.

Motorola on the other hand have their own UIQ plans and word is they are going to release more UIQ phones before the new Symbian Foundation's own platform becomes available. Still, they don't have any strategy for the support of the already existing and future handsets (much like SE).

We've always known that UIQ phones don't really have a competitive edge to them, but now it's official. UIQ is already a dead fish. You are welcome to share your condolences in the comments.

That is one of the unfairness compitition from nokia to knock out others.

at last it has been officialy announced! i found a nice comment on GSMArena that i do agree with the writer:
Quote:
There is no point "investing" your time on a specific platform. So what if UIQ is dead. Whoever has a UIQ or is considering getting one, it won't matter if it will stop or not, as long as the specific phone is fully functional. Noone will buy a phone forever. Most people change them every year.
I currently have a P900 and P1. And as long as they work it won't matter if UIQ is dead. How about if there was a UIQ 4.0? It would still be totally different from my current one, so why not something else.
Good try SE, in my opinion much better than S60.

I have an idea.
If SonyEricsson said UIQ is dead, I dare them declare UIQ source files as open-source.
If they give us the source and all the tools for development, I bet that UIQ community will show SE how stupid they are and what great things we can accomplish without their help.
It is outrageous and from my knowledge unheard of that a phone software producer QUITS all its clients.
I mean... I was not really interested in UIQ 4.0 (as long as it is not down compatible), but we were waiting for FIRMWARE updates. Look what great job did swm@il and the others for modding.

If only SE would have listen our prayers... damn !@#$ERS
