SINOPSIS

Ambientada en el año 1987, es la historia de Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), una chica de 16 años nacida y criada en una vida que nadie desearía. Se ha quedado embarazada por segunda vez de su padre ausente; en casa, es prácticamente una esclava de su madre (Mo’Nique), una mujer amargada que abusa de ella emocional y físicamente. Su instituto es un verdadero caos, y está acabando secundaria con buenas notas y un secreto inconcebible: no sabe leer ni escribir.

Precious puede estar a veces triste, pero nunca se da por vencida. Detrás de su expresión impasible se encuentra una jovencita observadora y curiosa con una innata e inamovible sensación de que en el mundo le aguardan nuevas oportunidades. Amenazada de expulsión en el instituto, a Precious le ofrecen el traslado a una escuela alternativa que sigue el sistema Each One/Teach One, donde además de aprender, los alumnos también participan en la enseñanza. Precious no sabe qué significa “alternativa”, pero su instinto le dice que ésta es la oportunidad que estaba esperando. En el taller de alfabetización impartido por la paciente pero estricta Srta. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious emprende un viaje personal que la llevará de la oscuridad, el dolor y la impotencia a la luz, el amor y la autodeterminación.
