Add album art and edit mp3 tags

Here is a tutorial which will show you how to add album art to your songs and also to edit their tag information. Tag information is the information which is displayed when you play the song such as artist name, album name, etc... Most music players have support for a certain level of tag information such as artist name, album art, etc... Nokia Music Player and LCG Jukebox are two examples of music players for S60 that have such a feature including support for album art.

This tutorial makes use of a tag editor known as Mp3Tag. You can download it from here.
Install this program and then follow the steps. I do not own a Macintosh and so am unable to help users with a Mac. It is suggested that you look for alternatives to mp3Tag, same goes for Linux users unless you can make it work with Wine.

NOTE: Take a backup of your music incase you do something wrong later on. Just to be safe

1) Open Mp3Tag, and you will be presented with the window as shown below:
This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 873x564.

2) Open your selection of music for a certain album or a single song that you wish to edit the tag information or add album art to. You can do this by either dragging the selection or by using the menu or the icon in the toolbar. Then you should have something which looks like this:

3) After selecting your music, drag the album art picture to the 'album art' box and then click on save icon on toolbar or select it from the menu. You will see a message like below followed by a success dialog box.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 951x587.

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 949x587.

4) You can now test your music in LCG Jukebox or in the Nokia Music Player if it supports album art. As my N80's default music player does not support album art, I was not able to provide my own screenshot for this but rather got another screenshot from google which showed how it looked. However I have tested the music in LCG Jukebox, and it works great.

5) EXTRA STEP if you want to edit tag data. Select the music you wish to edit tags of, and then edit the tags using the options provided on the left hand side of mp3Tag and the click on save either using the toolbar icon or from the menu. A similar "Saving tags" window will appear as shown above followed by a 'success' dialog box.

This is supposedly the soon-to-be FAQ:

Q: Why did you recommend mp3Tag specifically and not (insert mp3 tag editor program here)?
A: This has been tested and provides the exact ID Tag version readable by Nokia default Music Player.

Q: I am having trouble editing single mp3 files, can you help me?
A: Select one song at a time, edit the tag, and then click save. It is a little troublesome for single files but its possible. Remember to make backups just in case something goes wrong.

Q: What size of album art picture do you recommend?
A: Depending on your screen resolution and mobile phone processor speed. A bigger album art picture will take longer to load. You can easily test this with LCG Jukebox. Something in the range of (150*150) to (300*300) should do fine.

Q: What version of ID3 Tag can the default music player read?
A: I am not very sure of this, but I think its v2.3 .

Q: Where can I find album art for (insert your favorite album here) ?
A: This thread is just to show you the process. To find album art pictures, you can use Google image search or other sites such as CDCovers or Amazon.

Q: I did everything you said in the tutorial, but I still can't see album art on my phone. My phone is N80, E65, N71, or another Symbian phone with left-handed music controls. What is wrong?
A: I am sorry to dissapoint you my friend, but your default music player does not support album art. I suggest you use LCG Jukebox which can be found over at our applications section. I did not provide links as various versions work with various phones only. For my N80, only v2.12 works fine, the others look stretched on my screen. Of course I am referring to the cracked versions.

Thats all the FAQ I could think of at the moment. Please note that this is my first ever guide to be posted on the internet and so your critcism is highly appreciated in helping me improve my guide further. If you have any suggestions, you are very welcome to post them. And if I feel they will help improve the guide, I will include them in my guide and give you credit respectively.

You may post this guide on other forums you visit for the sake of helping others but just remember to include credits. If you need a name, you can use K12 or MKH or Khalid Hussain.

And before I forget, if mp3Tag has helped you, please consider donating a small amount for further development of the application. I am not endorsing it or anything, but I feel I have to post this as its such a great application provided free of charge.

This guide has been written from the ground up including screenshots (except the QVGA music player screenshot) by Mohammad Khalid Hussain (or K12 on some forums).

Deleting "Stuck" Installer Files in S60 3rd Edition

I have seen a problem with “stuck” installer files in S60 3rd Edition phones for a couple of times. The information from Application Manager shows that the applications are not installed. However, they cannot be deleted because there is no Delete menu (see screenshot below). They cannot be re-installed either because it always fails with “Unable to install” message. Those files are basically just stuck there.

From my opinion, it looks like a bug in S60 3rd Edition (not sure if this has been fixed in S60 3rd FP1). I don’t really know how to reproduce this problem, but it has happened to my phones several times. Once, I saw this problem after one application failed to install. In other occasions, I saw this problem after resetting my phone to the default factory settings.

What should we do if we have this kind of “stuck” installer files in S60 3rd Edition? One way is to delete the installer file manually via Windows Explorer. Unfortunately, we cannot use any file manager application because those files are located in a protected folder.

* Firstly, connect your phone to a PC via USB.
* Choose Data Transfer (a.k.a. Mass Storage). Do not select PC Suite because you won’t be able to browse protected folders in PC Suite mode.
* Open Windows Explorer on your PC.
* Go to \private\10202dce on the phone’s folder.
* There, you should be able to find the installer files (.sis). Just remove them using Windows Explorer.

Compatible devices: S60 3rd, Nokia Nseries, Nokia Eseries.

Converting Your Videos to RealPlayer

Don’t you know that RealPlayer support DivX codecs too? It was a surprise to me… How do we convert our videos to be played in RealPlayer? There are already several blogs discussing about this topic. Here are some of them:

How To Upgrade & Use Voip & Ptt On Contract N95 Phone

I haven’t contributed for a long time, really due to not having any info of much use LOL.

A few months ago I decided on getting the N95 as it was the best kick *** do all mobile going in the UK.
I can’t say best going anywhere as I have seen the Sharp 911SH With TV Tuner.

Anyway, to my dilemma, N95, excellent phone only a couple of drawbacks.
All major phone networks in the UK have taken out features of the N95 to stop you making free calls over the internet (VOIP) and push to talk (PTT).

There excuse, the feature was not tested in time for the release of the phone (yeah right), wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact it avoids paying them huge amounts of money to call abroad.

So for all those who do not like their phones tampered with by these corporate bullies here is how to upgrade your phones firmware and software.
This detailed info will allow you to upgrade most N series phones that are fixed to a set network operator thus allowing these options removed by phone networks to be now working on your contract phone.

1) First you need to backup your phone memory to PC using
Code:
Content visible to registered users only,Please Register To View The Contents.
PC Suite
to get the latest version from the Nokia Site hxxp://europe.nokia.com/A4144905 25Mb
So connect your phone and backup all your files to pc first.

2) Disconnect your phone from the PC and switch it off.
Then switch it on while holding Green key (this is the make a call button) and the * key and the 3 key.
So switch on phone and hold down the Green + * + 3 all at same time and do not release until phone is booted up and the screen is displaying the menu.
Do not do this unless you have backed up your phone as it will hard reset and all your data will be gone.

3) Next we are going to change the Product code of the phone.
Have you wondered why when you connect your phone to the PC to upgrade using PC suite, Nokia upgrade software says there is no update?
The product code is the reason you can never upgrade your phone where others can.

All major network operators have there own product code, when you connect to Nokia with your phone attached to PC Suite, Nokia upgrade only sees the product code for your network and wont upgrade your phone as the network operator your with doesn’t want you to upgrade (they wont be able to control you).

To change the product code we need to use a cool piece of software called The NSS - Nemesis Service Suite.
hxxp://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/files/NSS/NSS.zip

Once this is installed connect your N95 to PC in PC Suite mode.
Run the programme NSS that you just installed.

Looking at the picture included in this info:-

1) In the top hand right your see a blue icon (scan for devises), external hardrives can be detected so best to remove them first. Click this blue icon.

2) Click on “PHONE INFO”, this is to display the info you will be altering.

3) Click on “SCAN” this displays your phone version and IME.

4) Click on “READ” this displays the product code that you will alter, this is all that you will alter using this programme.

5) This is the product code. You need to change this to 0534841, this is Euro 1 product code. If you want to use Euro 2 this is 0534844.

6) Tick the enable box

7) Click on “WRITE”, this writes the new product code to your N95.

That's all there is to it, once you have done this close down the programme and run Nokia PC Suite and select "UPDATE PHONE SOFTWARE".

The software will connect to Nokia and amazingly your N95 will now be detected and it says there is a upgrade for your N95 where before you did this there wasn`t.

The upgrade is around 115meg in size, it is best to have your phone plugged into the main while doing this upgrade as having your phone connected to the USB drains the battery of the phone very fast.

The phone may reboot a few times during the upgrade so dont panic.
Once the upgrade is complete PC Suite will inform you.
After the upgrade is complete you can re-install the backup from the PC.

One thing i noticed was that after the upgrade i had VOIP and PTT in my menu, once i installed the back up from my PC they vanished so i just rebooted the phone and they returned.

To check they are there just go on any contacts name and select options for call or txt and you will see them in the menu, you can now call the contact using a internet call or a push to talk once you have set them up in the settings.

Oh and one other thing I noticed reading a few threads, even after people have posted threads you always get some one who shouldn’t be allowed to own a mobile saying they don’t understand, yet they haven’t read the info provided.
Please don’t ask me to explain what I have already said here it is self explanatory.

4) using Xplore open the telcodes.html, to search the list press "1"

PowerBoot is the solution for people who want to run some certain applications on their cellular phones upon booting up. PowerBoot maintains a startup list of applications and run them when the phone is switched on. Phone users can modify the startup list in PowerBoot. It is just like the Microsoft Windows startup folder on PC.

PowerBoot is designed for advanced mobile phone users. User determines which applications he wants to run and selects them in PowerBoot. The user himself should ensure his selected applications would not cause any problem.

PowerBoot Tutorial

Let's take a step-by-step tutorial to see how to use PowerBoot.

When you run PowerBoot for the first time, there should be no data configured in
PowerBoot so the startup list should be empty, as
shown in figure 1

Now you can add some applications into the startup list by opening the Options menu and selecting "Add installed App…" item.

You will see the "Installed Apps List" which contains applications installed on the phone. You can select any applications from the list.

In this tutorial we take "Notepad" for example. Please find the application and select it from the list.

PowerBoot will ask for your confirmation to add the application. Please select "OK".

Now "Notepad" is added to the startup list.
Go back to check the startup list, you will fnd the "Notepad" application in the list.

Close PowerBoot and reboot the phone. You will see Notepad is running after the phone boots up.

You can also add applications from "Running Apps" list to startup list. The "Running Apps" list contains applications currently running in the phone memory.

PowerBoot Operation
PowerBoot is small and simple. Following diagram explains all the operations of PowerBoot menus.

Hot trick: Move UR folder with icons in the app menu in V.20 firmware

N95 menu in V20

Here’s the menu in my N95 after upgrading to V20

Good looking huh?

S60 manages folders pretty bad in my opinion, when you create a new one, you can’t change it’s icon, and when you have a folder inside a folder (like the office folder in V20s firmware), you can’t move it to the main menu, which is bad in my opinion, since I like all my main folders in the main menu, but also like each one to have a special icon…

First pretend the “folder” folder is you office folder, and you want to move it to the main menu, but there’s no “Move to folder” option on the left softkey , you have to start by setting up like the screenshot, the folder you want to move at the last place, and any app you can easily install and remove in the place before, in my case I chose the MovingBall app.

Now go, and uninstall MovingBall thru the app. manager, quickly press menu, go to the apps folder and press options above the MovingBall app:

Now wait, the MovingBall app is being uninstalled, when it finishes uninstalling, its icon will disappear from the menu , leaving the folder hi-lighted, and the “Move to folder” options still available in the options!

And voila! Just move the folder!

And again, we shouldn’t have to use this method for moving folders , S60 should have this option right from the start, even better, they should allow changing folder icons, if
Code:
Content visible to registered users only,Please Register To View The Contents.
OS can do it…
